Abstract:

Molybdenum diselenide (MoSe?), a layered transition metal dichalcogenide, is a promising electrode material for electrochemical energy storage owing to its structural characteristics and Faradaic charge-storage behavior. This study investigates the structural properties and electrochemical performance of MoSe? for potential supercapacitor applications. X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis revealed characteristic reflections corresponding to the (002), (100), and (110) planes, consistent with the hexagonal 2H-MoSe? structure. Electrochemical behavior was evaluated using cyclic voltammetry (CV) at scan rates of 10–60 mV s?¹ and galvanostatic charge–discharge (GCD) measurements at current densities of 1–5 A g?¹. The CV profiles exhibited distinct anodic and cathodic features, suggesting Faradaic redox contributions to the overall charge-storage mechanism. Meanwhile, the GCD curves displayed quasi-triangular profiles with characteristic deviations from ideal capacitive behavior, supporting the contribution of redox-mediated charge storage. A discharge time of approximately 460 s was recorded at 1 A g?¹, decreasing with increasing current density. The consistent profile characteristics across the investigated current densities demonstrate sustained electrochemical charge–discharge behavior under the tested conditions. These findings establish MoSe? as a promising candidate for further development as a supercapacitor electrode and motivate quantitative investigations of specific capacitance, rate capability, cycling stability, and electrode kinetics to determine its practical energy-storage potential.
